Basketball surrounds Brenna Freeze.

When she's not playing, the La Cueva guard watches college (any team, men's or women's) and pro games (the San Antonio Spurs) on TV.

Hanging prominently in Freeze's room are old La Cueva basketball posters.

The 5-foot-11 junior has doubled her scoring average since last season. Freeze netted 13.3 points per game during the APS Invitational, helping lead the Bears to second place (they lost to Mayfield in the finals).

Freeze also excels in volleyball.

Trib: If you had to pick, would you choose basketball over volleyball?

Freeze: Yeah, most likely. I've been around it a lot longer. I only started volleyball in eighth grade (she started basketball in third grade). My dad played basketball in college in Canada.

Trib: So I guess you're a fan of Steve Nash (the Phoenix Suns guard hails from Canada)?

Freeze: Yeah (laughs).

Trib: Do you watch much basketball on TV?

Freeze: Yeah. I don't really have a favorite college team. We just got the Mountain. We watch whatever's on. But we like to watch the Spurs in the NBA because my mom and dad went to school in Texas near (San Antonio).

Trib: What team do you look most forward to playing?

Freeze: I like playing Rio Rancho and Sandia. Some of my friends I play in AAU with go to those schools. Plus, they're two of the best teams. It's fun to play them.

Trib: Who is your closest friend on another team?

Freeze: She's from Rio Rancho - Megan Muniz. We've been on the same (AAU) team for a long time.

Trib: Your coach, Greg Berger, has said he'd love to pick the brain of Bob Knight. Does he ever resemble Knight?

Freeze: I don't think so (laughs), but I don't know how (Knight) is at practice.

Trib: Did you buy Christmas presents for your teammates?

Freeze: Well we always have a team Christmas party and this year it's at my house. One of the dads always dresses like Santa and the seniors all get a big present. Everybody else gets a little present.

Trib: Which holiday movie would you rather watch, Christmas Vacation or A Christmas Story?

Freeze: Christmas Vacation. I love Chevy Chase and all those movies.

Trib: You guys had nine days between your last two games. Did you do anything unusual at practice?

Freeze: No, they were just regular practices.

Trib: What song always makes you change the station?

Freeze: I don't like slow stuff. But I like country and just a mix of different things.

Trib: Do you ever find yourself watching infomercials?

Freeze: Sometimes, if I'm really bored.

Trib: Ever order anything?

Freeze: No. I just like to see how they try to sell it.

Trib: What fad don't you understand?

Freeze: I don't know why girls wear those long tights under skirts in the winter. Why do they even wear skirts? It's winter.
