After placing the last two years, Manzano swimmer Taylor Busby should be considered among the favorites for the 200 meter individual medley at February's state meet.
When he's not in the water - which isn't often - Busby can be found hiking or shooting a variety of guns.
Trib: What about the medley appeals to you?
Busby: I like it because it's not a sprint. It's not just jumping in the water and swimming for 30 seconds. You use every stroke and everything you do in practice relates.
Trib: Ever consider trying triathlons?
Busby: Yes. I do a lot of fitness sports. I do open water swimming. It's five (kilometers) which is like 3.12 miles.
Trib: Do you enjoy water parks or pool parties or any recreational swimming?
Busby: Yeah. Sometimes it's weird to go to the pool if I'm not swimming competitively, but I get down.
Trib: When did you lose the floaties?
Busby: I've been swimming my whole life. But I didn't get into it competitively until late, seventh grade. My mom just took me out there and dropped me in the water.
Trib: What kind of cross training do you do?
Busby: A lot of running. I live right by the mountains so I run and hike all the time. I do a little bit of weights.
Trib: How did you celebrate New Year's last year?
Busby: Just with some friends from the swim team. We just sat around and played Trivial Pursuit and stuff like that. I just got murdered in Music Scene It game.
Trib: What do you do when you're not in the water?
Busby: I'm big into shooting. I'm on an Airsoft team, it's kind of like paint ball. I like to shoot all kinds of guns.
Trib: Rate the cleanliness of your room on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest.
Busby: Can I go into negative numbers?
Trib: Whatever you need.
Busby: I'd go negative-two. It's been worse, but it's pretty bad right now.
Trib: What's the first thing you do in the morning?
Busby: Look at the clock and whine. If I have practice, I have to get up at 4 a.m.
Trib: How many razors do you go through?
Busby: Not many. I have a full body suit (for the water).
Trib: Is club swimming more competitive than swimming at school?
Busby: Yeah, it definitely is. In club you kill yourself to do better every day. You shave. You dip yourself in hot wax. On trips you stay away from everybody so you can get a good night's sleep. It's kind of sad. In high school it's more relaxed. You keep it fun. That's what sports are supposed to be.
Trib: Fill in the blank. I wish I could . . .
Busby: Fly. That would be cool.
