In a vacant clothing store with no air conditioning, 29 voting machines (that are used all too infrequently) line the bare walls. Prompted by a fellow poll worker's question, Betty Bramer rattles off a list: "Oh, I brought crochet. I brought cards. I brought games. I brought whatever."

that she needs something to pass the hours when only eight people a day trickle into her site at 6601 Fourth St. N.W. Those potholders she's making this year? She plans to give those to other poll workers.

After pretty much every election, we hear about dismal voter turnout - that only such and such percent of registered voters bothered to carry out their civic duty. And it's true. In Bernalillo County's 2002 primary, only 17 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot.

How discouraging.

But there's still time. Through Saturday, you can deliver an absentee ballot or take advantage of 13 early voting sites in the county. And polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 6.

Help keep the poll workers busy with something other than potholders.
