New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence announced Laura Martinez of Albuquerque was named as one of the five Legends of Nursing in the 2006 Nursing Excellence Awards.

She was the first Hispanic nurse to earn a doctoral degree from the University of New Mexico in 1985. She was appointed to the New Mexico Board of Nursing by the governor in 1986. She also was appointed to the governor's task force on nursing in 1990.

She served on numerous committees and boards and co-founded the state's chapter of the National Hispanic Nurses Association.

The following completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas:

Air Force Airman 1st Class Brandon H. Bednarski is the son of Dave Roberts of Tijeras.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Jarred A. Rule is the son of Jerald Rule of Albuquerque.

Air Force Airman Matthew Griego is the son of Antoinette Griego and grandson of Jesse Pacheco, both of Albuquerque. He is a 2006 graduate of Rio Grande High School.
