Oh great, a smart aleck.
That's what Cibola coach Ralph "Judge" Chavez thought when he met his starting inside linebacker, Indiana Jones.
Chavez thought Jones was teasing him. But he soon discovered Jones was telling the truth and that he is "all business," Chavez said.
Jones, a junior, and Andrew Medina rank among the Cougars' top tacklers. They will be tested Friday night when Alamogordo visits for a Class 5A semifinal.
Trib: Indiana, is that a nickname?
Jones: No, that's my real name.
Trib: How did that come about?
Jones: My mom was watching a movie when my brother was a baby. She didn't think she'd have another kid. She said if she did she'd name him Indiana. Seven years later, she had me.
Trib: What's your brother's name?
Jones: Trevallion; it's from a Louis L'Amore book.
Trib: You must have a lot of stories.
Jones: One time our track coach (Ken Henry), he was a substitute. He asked me what my name was. I told him Indiana Jones. I guess he thought I was messing with him. He said, "Get out. You're out of here (Jones points to the door)." The whole class was like, "No; that's his real name." Every time I take pictures, they ask to see my ID.
Trib: From a linebacker's viewpoint, what makes Alamogordo tough to stop?
Jones: They have great running backs, some of the best in the state, I know that.
Trib: You guys have handled fast teams (Rio Grande, Highland) and a big team (La Cueva). Alamogordo has a good combination of both. Does that concern you?
Jones: We have size, and if everybody does their job, we'll be all right.
Trib: What's your favorite Thanksgiving dish?
Jones: Ham.
Trib: You're not a turkey guy?
Jones: Ah, it's kind of dry.
Trib: When did you know Cibola could be a playoff contender?
Jones: During the summer we always knew. We talked about winning a state championship. But when we beat Rio Grande, that's when we knew.
Trib: Did your loss to Rio Rancho effect that?
Jones: Yeah, we wanted to get that district title; that was one of our goals. But after it happened, we just put it behind us and focused on the next week.
Trib: Tell me a fad you just don't get.
Jones: I don't understand how all these guys can wear earrings and all that piercing stuff.
Trib: What will you be doing in 10 years?
Jones: Well, let's see. How old am I? Sixteen now? I want to be graduated from college and be a civil engineer or something along those lines.
Trib: If you scored a touchdown, would you celebrate?
Jones: Yeah, sometimes I think I want to be the guy that just hands the ball to the ref. But then I think I'd want to spike it in another guy's face. It depends on who we're playing. If it's a team like Clovis, I mean they have so much class, I'd probably just hand the ball to the ref. If it was a team like La Cueva, then I might do a little more.
Trib: What's the funniest story you can tell about a teammate?
Jones: (Cibola senior) Joe Lehocky saran-wrapped some girl's car. Then he walks outside and his car is completely saran-wrapped. It's on the tires, whip cream all over. I don't know who got him really. I don't think it was anybody on the football team. He had got that girl, so . . .
