The Spartans are coming to the Duke City.
San Jose State (7-4, 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference) will take on the University of New Mexico (6-6, 4-4) in the inaugural New Mexico Bowl to be played at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 23 at University Stadium.
The Spartans accepted the bowl invitation Tuesday afternoon.
“San Jose State has had a fantastic season and we’re happy to extend this invitation,” Jeff Siembieda, executive director of the New Mexico Bowl, stated in a news release. “We feel we have a terrific matchup for our inaugural game. We look forward to the Spartans and their great fans coming to the Land of Enchantment for what promises to be a great football game and festive bowl week. They are a program on the upswing that has made tremendous strides."
This is the first time in six years the Spartans have been bowl eligible and will be their first bowl appearance since defeating Central Michigan 48-24 in the 1990 California Raisin Bowl.
The Lobos are bowl eligible for the sixth consecutive year and have made bowl appearances four of the past six seasons. UNM, however, has not won a bowl game since the 1961 Aviation Bowl.
San Jose State ends its regular season Saturday when it hosts rival Fresno State, a team the Spartans have not defeated since 1990.
UNM completed its regular season with a 41-14 win over San Diego State on Saturday. The Lobos will not practice this week, but players are continuing their weights and conditioning program. Their practices resume next week.
Tickets for the New Mexico Bowl are on sale now at the UNM Ticket Office. The tickets also can be purchased by phone at (505) 925-5626 or online at www.newmexicobowl.com. The prices range from $15 for students to $30 for general admission seats. Family ticket packages also are available.
