Candidate for District 28 state representative

Name: Shay Rose

Age: 60

Campaign Web site address: www.shayrose.org

Occupation: Retired, more than 25 years in finance and asset management

Family: Husband, Mike; three adult children; two beautiful granddaughters.

Education: One year college, continuing education

Please list the experience you think would make you a good state representative.

More than 25 years in finance and asset management of up to a billion dollar in portfolios. I am very involved in our community; I stay informed on issues and possible solutions; I am a facilitator, independent thinker, honest, dependable and a good listener. My only job will be to energetically represent my constituents and the voters of New Mexico.

Have you ever been arrested or charged with a felony or misdemeanor? No.

What is the best meal you can cook from scratch?

My husband says my green chile chicken enchiladas.

Last book you read: "What's the Matter with Kansas" by Thomas Frank

What was your biggest mistake in life and what lesson did you learn?

Not completing my college education. The lesson: Get it while you can.

A recent report by the Fiscal Policy Institute found that states with a minimum wage above $5.15 have had faster job growth in the small business and retail trade sector than states with the federal minimum wage. Given that, would you support a statewide minimum wage of $7.50 Why or why not?

I believe the minimum wage should be increased at the federal level, but if the federal government can't get it done, then the states will have to do it. According to the Fiscal Policy Institute Report (March 30, 2006): "Total job growth was faster in the higher minimum wage states. Faster job growth also occurred in the retail trade sector, the sector of the economy employing the most workers at low wages." I think Santa Fe proves this to be true.

The Legislature in 2007 will consider some ethics reforms. What one change would you make to improve ethics in our state government.

Campaign contribution limits with more complete lobbyist disclosure laws; also disclosure of committee votes to keep our representatives honest and accountable.

Would you vote to repeal the death penalty in New Mexico? Did not answer.

Would you support and fund a way for the Legislature to keep better tabs on public building projects? Yes.

Would you support a measure that would allow chronically ill patients to use marijuana? Yes.

What more should New Mexico do in response to drought?

Statewide conservation measures and allowing the state engineer to have more control over water well permits.

What can be done to improve the state's public schools?

Realistic funding.

Is the current system for allocating the state's capital improvement money working? Why or why not? What specifically would you change? Did not answer.

Should the state build another prison to deal with the increasing inmate population?

Sadly, yes. Having an out of state company come in to build a facility and give employees substandard pay or bring in employees from out of state, is like outsourcing our New Mexico jobs. We should also be investing more in prevention and rehabilitation.

Would you support an increase in lawmaker per diem or a salaried Legislature? Yes.

What is the greatest need in your district?

Schools.

How long have you lived in your district? Six years, ~18 in the Albuquerque area. I am a native New Mexican.
