Candidate for District 16 state representative

Name: Storm Field, Republican

Age: 23

Campaign Web site address: www.stormtfield.com

Occupation: Real-estate developer

Family: Single; fourth child of southeastern New Mexico ranching family and proud uncle of five: three boys and two girls

Education: Bachelor's, pre-law, University of New Mexico

Please list the experience you think would make you a good state representative.

Having owned a successful small business in New Mexico, I understand that one is judged on performance of work completed and in order to excel in the areas of priority then sometimes costs must be cut in areas of lesser priority.

Have you ever been arrested or charged with a felony or misdemeanor? If yes, explain. No.

What is the best meal you can cook from scratch?

Steak and potatoes.

Last book you read: "Memorial Day," Vince Flynn

What was your biggest mistake in life and what lesson did you learn?

After not completely feeling out a business partner, I was left bearing the brunt of a bad deal. I learned to always know who you're dealing with before you get involved.

A recent report by the Fiscal Policy Institute found that states with a minimum wage above $5.15 have had faster job growth in the small business and retail trade sector than states with the federal minimum wage. Given that, would you support a statewide minimum wage of $7.50 Why or why not?

No, a minimum wage increase should come from the private sector rather than mandated by any branch of government.

The Legislature in 2007 will consider some ethics reforms. What one change would you make to improve ethics in our state government?

To enforce the laws that we currently have on the books and hold politicians accountable.

Would you vote to repeal the death penalty in New Mexico?

No.

Would you support and fund a way for the Legislature to keep better tabs on public building projects?

I will support the idea of keeping better tabs on building projects, but as far as funding goes, it's hard to say before the legislation is in front of me.

Would you support a measure that would allow chronically ill patients to use marijuana? Did not answer.

What more should New Mexico do in response to drought?

Provide tax incentives for builders and home owners, become more aware of water conservation and build and maintain accordingly.

What can be done to improve the state's public schools?

First and foremost, provide funding to allow our children a proper learning environment. Second, pay the good teachers what they are worth.

Is the current system for allocating the state's capital improvement money working? Why or why not? What specifically would you change?

No, right now too many projects are being vetoed based on the relationship that the legislator has with the governor. Capital improvement should go to those that need it and not those that play the political game.

Should the state build another prison to deal with the increasing inmate population?

The state should fund not another prison but some sort of prisoner work camp such as Arizona has implemented. The people that choose to break society's laws should be giving back to the progression of the offended society.

Would you support an increase in lawmaker per diem or a salaried legislature?

Yes. As the system stands, it is actually costing our representatives to serve. We should pay them for the job they are doing.

What is the greatest need in your district?

Schools and jobs.

How long have you lived in your district? Did not answer.
