Allen McCulloch, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, escaped injury in a fiery head-on collision near Cuba Sunday night after his car hit a patch of water, his campaign said today.
McCulloch helped pull passengers from the car he hit, campaign spokesman Mario Sanchez said.
He said McCulloch was driving home to Farmington around 6:30 p.m. Sunday when his car hit a patch of water and collided with another vehicle. That vehicle contained six passengers.
Sanchez said McCulloch helped pull four of the passengers from the car, including one woman who was on fire.
"The car was on its side on fire," Sanchez said.
Sandoval County Sheriff John Paul Trujillo did not immediately return a call seeking comment this morning.
McCulloch is challenging incumbent Sen. Jeff Bingaman, a Silver City Democrat.
Bingaman holds a wide lead in the race, according to recent polling.
McCulloch continued campaigning today, Sanchez said.
