Doobie, doobie, doo
The New York Times' "Caucus" blog on Tuesday wrote about Richardson signing medical marijuana into law, drawing a stream of mostly positive reader comments.
Far more fun, however, were the reader comments on a similar story posted on High Times' Web site. Remember, these are the kind of readers drawn to a magazine devoted to drugs. One example:
"A `reasonable' politician? It's about (expletive) time! Way to go Governor Bill!!!
"How about running for President???? "
Whoa, dude, you're spacin' out. Like, he's already - hey, where'd the Fritos go?
North Korea dreamin'
Richardson finally confirmed Tuesday that he is going to North Korea, along with former Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony Principi and K.A. Anthony Namkung, a senior adviser to Richardson, his office said.
Back to Nevada
The Nevada Appeal says Richardson will be the guest speaker at the Carson City Democrats' annual Jefferson-Jackson fund-raising dinner April 29. Cost is $125 for a hosted cocktail reception with Richardson and dinner, or $60 for no-host cocktails (meaning "buy your own") and dinner.
Wanna guess whether he'll have a fund-raiser (or four) of his own while he's there?
Good haul not good enough?
The author of the "Mark My Words" blog offered his insights into what Richardson's fund-raising total means:
"Richardson pulled in a reasonably impressive $6 million this past quarter. Four years ago, that would have been considered a good haul and would position Richardson for a solid ad blitz in the early primary states.
"Richardson will still likely be able to afford such a blitz in Iowa, Nevada, and New Hampshire if his fund-raising continues to go this well, but the front-loaded slate of spoiler primaries in California and Illinois will still make it impossible for a candidate like Richardson to effectively proceed. . . . There is no way money can flow in fast enough between mid-January and early February."
Richardson scares Hollywood
The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that New Mexico is making Hollywood nervous with its budding film industry. And the story credits Richardson:
"It was Richardson, now a Democratic presidential candidate, who spearheaded New Mexico's film industry surge after his election in 2002 by pushing through one of the most generous tax rebate programs in the country, bankrolled by oil and gas revenue."
Presidential maaaaaadness
We're the last in town to mention this online NCAA-like presidential contest because it seemed so stupid. You go to billrichardsonblog.com, click on the brackets and "vote" for your favorite.
Look, this isn't anything at all like basketball where teams actually meet and do something. Some folks have too much time on their hands.
Knocking 'em dead
Liza Sabater, of the "Culture Kitchen" blog, caught Richardson's act in New York City last week and had her apathy turned upside down.
"Richardson has a needle-sharp sense of humor that is self-effacing. He has the timing of a stand-up comedian, like a Seinfeld or a George Carlin," she wrote Tuesday. "The man knows how to work not just a room but a whole audience. . . .
"Nobody has talked or linked foreign debt, poverty, Darfur and misogynistic policies along the Third World the way Richardson has.
"So a shout out to Bill Richardson and a note to say: Governor, I am definitely keeping my powder dry."
