Check out Del Norte

Del Norte High School's chess team is the New Mexico Activities Association State Chess Champion.

Robert Brown, an English teacher, sponsors the club. The students play chess at lunch in his classroom every day.

Team members are Captain Majeed Qurbanzada, Zach Stuart, Brent Jones, Jameel St. Lot, Steven Kwan and Jeremiah Ortiz.

"We were one of the respected teams," Brown said. "But usually Los Alamos, Albuquerque Academy or Santa Fe win the championship."

The teams played 24 games. "We only lost two, tied five and won 17," Brown said. "It was one of the best performances in the state in 20 years."

Del Norte won the championship once before in 2001. "We've always been competitive, but they took it over the top this year," Brown said.

The state championship was held at Los Alamos High School in late March.

55 years of science exhibits

The annual New Mexico Science and Engineering Fair will draw about 475 middle and high school students to New Mexico Tech in Socorro April 14.

More than $100,000 in awards will be announced. Eight senior division grand award winners and two alternates will advance to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque May 13-19.

Ten minutes daily

An extra 10 minutes has been added to the school day to make up instructional time lost due to snow days in Albuquerque Public Schools.

The 10 minutes were added Thursday and will be continued through May 25, except in year-round schools, which will add the extra time to the last 36 days of their school year, district officials said.

The district is seeking parent input on how snow days should be handled in the future. Go to "Give APS feedback" at www.aps.edu.

Alone at the top

The only New Mexico student to win the $2,500 National Achievement Scholarship is Isaac Koech, a Highland High School senior.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation started the academic competition in 1964 to honor scholastically-talented black youth. Eight hundred students nationwide were honored.

Isaac will use his scholarship to study engineering, said Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent Beth Everitt.

Kick Butts Day

The Fame and Shame Awards for the high school and middle school Youth Advocates of the Year will draw some 400 students involved in anti-tobacco campaigns to Albuquerque's KiMo Theater April 14.

The awards ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m.

The program will feature radio and television commercials on preventing teen tobacco use written and produced by New Mexico teens.

YES for Laura

Laura Glass, an Albuquerque High student, will compete in Washington, D.C., this month for a $50,000 scholarship from the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition.

She will be questioned about her project "Characterizing Social Contact Networks for the Spread of Pandemic Influenza." Epidemiology explores patterns of disease, illness and injury with the goal of prevention, control and treatment.

Laura is among 60 regional finalists of the more than 700 students who entered the competition. She will get at least $2,000 for college as a finalist.
