Steve Alford's first recruiting class as University of New Mexico's coach is picking up where his last one left off -- with an Iowa-signed player.
Indiana point guard Dairese Gary, previously bound for Iowa, has signed with Alford and New Mexico, according to Dennise Gary, Dairese's mom.
The three-star recruit was the only of three Iowa signees from the 2007 class to follow Alford.
"He's already signed (with UNM)," Dennise said. "He just wanted to do whatever he could to play for coach Alford. I think it's a good fit."
Dennise and Dairese plan to make an official visit to New Mexico soon, Dennise said.
The 6-foot-1 Gary, who played for Concord High School in Elkhart, Ind., is ranked as the 28th-best point guard in the country, according to Scout.com.
Iowa granted Gary's request for a release from his letter of intent shortly after Alford left Iowa. The other recruits, guard Jake Kelly and forward Jarryd Cole, stayed with Iowa and new coach Todd Lickliter.
Dennise said a couple of Big Ten schools contacted Gary after he reopened his recruitment, but she didn't remember which schools.
Gary was out of the house and unavailable for comment.
Another high school guard could follow Gary in the coming weeks, as four-star Illinois guard Darrington Hobson said he arrives in Albuquerque on Wednesday night for an official visit. Alford has four scholarships for this class.
