Sandia girls basketball coach Susan Kubala raved about Kendra Coveal's focus early last season.

That's what made Coveal's recent talk about her own knee injury so surprising.

"I was down for a while," said Coveal, referring to the torn right ACL that cost her the season's final six games and might have cost the Matadors a great shot at a state title. "But basketball isn't everything."

Coveal, The Tribune's Girls Basketball Player of the Year, might be focused on hoops, but it hasn't shaken her perspective.

She seems excited about attending college classes in the fall at Adams State (Colo.) College. Soon Coveal will have to choose between two paths: business or medicine (specifically, pediatrics).

She's grateful for the support she received from Kubala, veteran of multiple knee surgeries herself, and the other Matadors.

"I was proud of them," said Coveal. "When you have a team like that, it makes (the injury) easier."

Basketball isn't done for Coveal. She should be ready to play for Adams State this fall. Considering her focus, don't be surprised if she closely resembles the All-State player who last played for Sandia, even after rehab.

Still, she knows basketball isn't the most important thing.
