MoveOn moving the guv
In an interview with the Washington newspaper the Hill, Gov. Bill Richardson talked about Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Iraq, fund-raising woes (using once again that tired old "rock star" line), and his growing appeal to groups like MoveOn.org in its Iraq forum last week. "Every time I go in front of a group like MoveOn, I make inroads because of my r‚sum‚ and my positions," Richardson said. "You're not canned. You've got no talking points. You just got to let it rip."
The freak show
The National Journal's "Hotline" blog had an interesting post Wednesday that tried to divine whether Hillary Clinton's unpopularity with bloggers (and Richardson's growing popularity) spells doom for her campaign. Has the ballyhooed power of the "netroots" improved much since 2004, when it gave Howard Dean an early boost, then nothing? One commenter on the site said nope.
"Remember the 2004 Iowa caucuses? Remember when Kos and the `netroots' invaded Iowa in their `people powered' revolution to elect Howard Dean? Remember how Iowa voters were repulsed when the netroots zealots knocked on their doors? Remember when out-of-state green-haired, tattooed, nose-pierced people stood on street corners in Des Moines waving signs for Howard Dean? Remember how Dean finished third, 20 points behind Kerry and Edwards once Iowans got to know the `people powered' movement?"
A step back
Richardson denounced Wednesday's Supreme Court ruling upholding a ban on partial-birth abortions, calling it "a dangerous step backward in regard to Americans' rights to personal choice and privacy."
A news release from his presidential campaign said he has consistently opposed any attempt to limit women's reproductive rights, and as a congressman voted against similar proposed bans and restrictions on a number of occasions.
The ruling, he said, "has opened the door to further challenges to personal medical decisions between patients and doctors that should not involve the government."
(Fund-) Raising Arizona
The "Rum, Romanism and Rebellion" blog analyzed how the Dem candidates are doing in raising cash in Arizona. This is one race that Richardson wins. He's got $71,325, over his nearest rival Barack Obama's $64,143.
"Already, something is interesting here. Richardson, who is considered a second-tier candidate by the national media, has a great deal of support in Arizona. (Hillary Rodham) Clinton, our front-runner, has only raised two-thirds of the amount Richardson has among Arizonans."
Yeah, but remember, Rodham Clinton still has whoppingly more money overall than Richardson.
