Simon Gutierrez, a former Del Norte High School standout, won the La Luz Trail Run on Sunday, a 9-mile trek from the base of the Sandia mountains that ended at the 10,678-foot Sandia Crest.
For Gutierrez, 40, it was his ninth victory in this event, breaking the record of eight he shared with Al Waquie.
Gutierrez finished the men's race in a time of 1 hour, 22 minutes and 18 seconds. Erik Skaggs, 25, was runner-up in a time of 1:24:16.
On the women's side, Rachel Cuellar, 25, a former Sandia High and New Mexico State runner, won in a time of 1:35:57. It was her fifth victory in this event, including four in a row.
Jacquelyne Gallegos, 24, a former University of New Mexico runner, clocked a time of 1:55:19 for second place.
