ALBUQUERQUE City Councilor Martin Heinrich says he is lining up some prominent backers in his bid for the Democratic nomination to run against U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson.
At a news conference today, Heinrich unveiled a list of endorsements including: state senators Jerry Ortiz y Pino and Cisco McSorley; state representatives Antonio "Moe" Maestas, Mimi Stewart and Gail Chasey; former Bernalillo County Commissioner Steve Gallegos; city councilors Debbie O'Malley, Michael Cadigan and Isaac Benton; Edgewood City Councilor Brad Hill; former mayor of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque John Hooker, and Jason Marks, vice chairman of the state Public Regulation Commission.
Although the group is weighted to the left, Heinrich said he intends "to go after every Democratic vote in the Democratic system, no matter what side of the spectrum they fall on."
"We're not in a general election, we're in a primary election so these folks expand the Democratic party geographically," Heinrich said. "If you look at the full list you'll really see people who represent various constituents."
Other Democrats who have expressed an interest in running against Wilson include Bryon Paez, who has served as an adviser to Gov. Bill Richardson, and former University of New Mexico President Louis Caldera.
