A boxing show headlined by Holly Holm appears to be in the works for late September, a card that likely will include the return of former contender Frankie Archuleta.
You can soon expect to hear about promoter Fresquez Productions putting on the show at Santa Ana Star Casino.
Holm, the popular world champion from Albuquerque, is 18-1-2 with five knockouts. Archuleta (24-5-1, 13 KOs) has been inactive for more than two years since his rematch loss to Johnny Tapia.
Also, an October date is being considered for a possible bout between Albuquerque's Ray Sanchez III (20-1, 15 KOs) and Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (33-0-1, 26 KOs). Negotiations with both parties are still in the works, Top Rank officials said.
Boxing fans, keep your fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, Top Rank is hosting the Telefutura-televised card tonight at El Paso's County Coliseum that will include several New Mexico fighters.
Earlier this year at Isleta, Top Rank gave us what has so far been this year's best fight - a thrilling 12-round draw between Jesus Soto-Karass (16-3-3, 13 KOs) of Los Mochis, Mexico, and Gilbert Venegas (10-4-3, 7 KOs) of East Moline, Ill.
On tonight's card, welterweights Soto-Karass and Venegas headline again, though this time - despite the demand for a rematch - they'll be taking on different opponents.
In the main event, Soto-Karass will fight Jose Antonio Ojeda (14-5-3, 8 KOs) of Santa Maria, Calif. Venegas will take on Michelle Rosales (16-1, 15 KOs) of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in the semimain event.
Other significant undercard bouts of interest to New Mexico fight fans include: Las Cruces super bantamweight Ricky Vasquez (2-0-1, 1 KO) against Gino Escamilla (1-0-1) of Laredo, Texas, and El Paso junior welterweight Bernardo Guereca (14-7-1, 3 KOs) vs. fellow Texan Carlos de la Cruz (10-8, 10 KOs). On the last Isleta card, Vasquez had a poor showing in his draw with Escamilla.
First bell is at 5:30 p.m. The televised portion begins at 7 p.m.
On Saturday night at the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio, Colo., Bloomfield welterweight Joe Gomez (11-1-1, 5 KOs) will be fighting. Gomez has taken a back seat to New Mexico's other top two welterweights, Sanchez and Joaquin Zamora, but some in the Four Corners say the overlooked Gomez might be the state's No. 1 boxer at 147 pounds.
Gomez will face El Paso's Bobby Joe Valdez (9-3-2, 4 KOs) in what could prove to be an exciting rematch. In 2006, the two fought to a six-round draw.
Also on the Sky Ute card, Albuquerque flyweight Jodi Esquibel (4-2, 2 KOs) will fight a rubber match with Seattle's Melissa Shaffer (10-5, 5 KOs); Farmington featherweight Victor Barela (8-0-1, 2 KOs) continues his comeback against Leshaun Blair (3-15) of Knoxville, Tenn.; and Farmington's Joe Barela (4-1) returns against Albuquerque's Ed Tomaselli (0-2).
The action gets started at 6 p.m.
