The first feature film to be shot at Albuquerque Studios comes with some major starpower.
The production team for "Will Eisner's The Spirit," a film starring Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson, has already moved into offices at the Mesa del Sol studios, with principal photography to begin in October, said Jeremy Hariton, the studios' executive director.
The film, as described in Hollywood trade journals, is an adaptation of a comic book about a rookie cop who comes back from the dead to fight crime as a vigilante.
It will be directed by Frank Miller, whose graphic novels were brought to life in the films "Sin City" and "300." Similar to those films, "The Spirit" will be filmed in live-action with an animated background, giving the picture a graphic novel ambience, Hariton said.
The project will continue through the end of the year.
Hariton said an announcement is expected soon on a second feature film to be shot at Albuquerque Studios. The facility is already hosting two TV series: "In Plain Sight," to be aired on USA Network, and "Breaking Bad" on AMC.
