ALBUQUERQUE A fire on the West Side sparked by lightning scorched 4 square miles but caused no major damage.
The fire started at about 4 p.m. Thursday. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department SWAT unit was training nearby and saw the blaze ignite. SWAT team members tried to help firefighters suppress the fire, and one of their vehicles sparked a small fire and was damaged.
Albuquerque Fire Department spokesman Capt. Mike Paiz said the fire was completely out and the area "mopped up" early this morning.
Had the fire continued to burn, it would have threatened the city's Police Shooting Range and the Double Eagle II Airport.
