I used to love going to Top Dog, trying to figure out those three trivia questions on the wall and admiring the pennants hanging from the ceiling.

Sure, the place was, er, less than fancy, but it was a cool space to grab a hot dog and pretend to know a thing or two about the Chicago Cubs.

That space, however, is no more. Top Dog moved into a new strip-mall-style building just west of the old one on Menaul Boulevard earlier this year.

The dark and greasy atmosphere is gone — and so are the pennants.

But, oh, Cheap Eaters, don't let that keep you from stopping by to order up a big, fat hot dog, Polish sausage or brat. They're all well within your budget, even though the new space is a touch brighter and nicer. (It has flagstone accents outside, but the red-and-yellow decor keeps it from being too upscale.)

My favorite: the Gloria ($6.10 plus tax for a Top Dog, fries and a soda). For an extra buck or so, you can get a ladle full of nacho cheese plopped on top of those fabulously sloppy shoestring fries. Just don't tell your doctor I sent you.

Cheap Eats highlights delicious items around town that cost $8 or less.
