Albuquerque early today was deadly.

A 16-year-old boy was shot dead at about 2:40 a.m. as he and two other teens drove around the city's West Side.

And in the Southeast Heights, a man in his 50s was found stabbed to death in a home. A transient trying to sell stolen items told police about the body at about 2:50 a.m.

Albuquerque police spokesman John Walsh said the busy homicide detectives had little information on the cases this morning but were making headway.

The teens, Walsh said, ages 14, 16 and 16, were driving on Arenal Road Southwest near Coors Boulevard when a vehicle behind them turned on the bright lights and fired several shots into their car.

One of the bullets struck the 16-year-old rear passenger in his torso. When his friends pulled him from the car in front of a nearby home at 5324 White Reserve Road S.W., Walsh said the boy was dead. His family was learning of the death this morning.

Family was also sought for the man found dead in a home at 700 Florida St. S.E., Walsh said.

Police were led to the home after stopping a man on suspicion he was trying to sell stolen items near Downtown.

"He said we had better handcuff him because he'd just killed a guy," Walsh said.

The man directed officers to the home on Florida where Walsh said they found the dead man exactly as expected. He had been stabbed.

Walsh said that as of this morning it was not clear whether the man was the homeowner, a renter or if there was another connection.

"We are still investigating," Walsh said.
