I have no plans to actually watch TV tonight.
That does not mean the apocalypse is upon us, merely that there's not much on that entices me to sink into my dog-hair-covered couch and settle in for the evening.
For those of you who require respite from the family and the loud toys Santa dropped off earlier, there's the series finale of "Extras" (8:30 p.m., HBO).
The comedy followed veteran English actor Andy Millman (Ricky Gervais), who has issues making a name for himself until he lands a spot on the lamest sitcom ever.
Now that Andy is a big star, his best friend and fellow actor Maggie (Ashley Jensen) finds herself in a bad way and has to beg her way onto a Clive Owen ("Children of Men") movie as an extra.
Not surprisingly, she adores his awesome handsomeness and can't wait to spend a little time in the presence of my future husband. It's too bad that he ends up being a complete jerk to Maggie, who just isn't as pretty as he would like.
Andy has also become a jerk and fires his agent. He impetuously quits his sitcom and goes on a self-destructive quest for more fame and respect.
This leads to the best part of the show: Andy's humiliating time on England's "Celebrity Big Brother." It's the best 15 minutes of TV I've seen in a long time.
Cheers!
"100 Greatest Songs of the '90s" (6 p.m., VH1) is a nice mindless way to end a long day full of stuffing yourself and cursing the toy-makers for not including the necessary batteries.
The five-part countdown features the story behind each tune and brings us up to date on what the decade's greatest "stars" are doing today.
Not that I need them, because I regularly Google MC Hammer to see what he's been doing since he left "The Surreal Life." Alanis Morissette, the Spice Girls, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Puff Daddy, Oasis, Radiohead and En Vogue are also highlighted, and I guess that's good, because I simply can't keep up with every Õ90s artist.
It's a goal though.
I do disagree with a lot of the list, however. Much as I like Christina Aguilera, "Genie in a Bottle" at No. 38 is not even close to being better than Right Said Fred's "I'm too Sexy," which landed at 80.
Otherwise, this is five hours of a countdown that is almost too legit to quit.
