Voting could endanger your soul, if you are Catholic and your political candidate supports or doesn't actively oppose abortion rights, some Catholics say.
A group planning a vigil Friday wants that sentence to read "your soul will be in danger" with an improper vote, and they want Archbishop of Santa Fe Michael J. Sheehan to make the "will" clear to the Catholics in his archdiocese.
Steve Pokorny is heading the 9:30 a.m. vigil outside of the Chapel of Holy Innocents at 740 San Mateo Blvd. N.E., just down the road from a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic that was the target of an arson on Christmas morning.
Pokorny said the timing of the vigil is coincidental to the arson and two other attacks on Albuquerque clinics this month.
"I happen to be in town visiting family," Pokorny, of Florida, said.
Catholics in other cities around the nation are having vigils, too, to persuade their local archbishops to take a stronger stance against politicians who support abortion rights, organizers say.
The vigils are sponsored by the Society for Truth and Justice, which is led by Randall Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue.
The Archdiocese of Santa Fe did not return phone calls Wednesday.
"It is morally wrong to vote for anyone who would support abortion," Pokorny said. "Many of them (archbishops) have not made it clear to the Catholic voter that you can't vote for whomever you want and no harm will come to your soul."
In addition to withholding votes from politicians who support abortion rights, Pokorny wants Sheehan to order priests to withhold Holy Communion.
