University of New Mexico football coach Rocky Long almost has a full house.
Long has been filling coaching vacancies since December, when UNM offensive coordinator Bob Toledo and wide receivers coach Dan Dodd took promotions at Tulane.
Matt Wells, the former tight ends coach at Tulsa the past five seasons, is the latest coach to join Long's staff. He fills Dodd's spot as wide receivers coach.
"We're real excited to have him on board," Long said.
Wells, 33, coached Tulsa's 2005 All-American tight end Garrett Mills, who set an NCAA single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end with 1,235 yards.
Before joining the Tulsa staff, Wells spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Navy.
He was a starting quarterback and free safety at Utah State under coach John L. Smith, playing on Big West Conference championship teams in 1993 and 1996.
Smith was the head coach at Michigan State last season and worked with the Lobos' new offensive coordinator, Dave Baldwin.
Wells was one of 15 candidates Baldwin and Long interviewed for the wide receivers coaching job.
"After a bunch of phone interviews, we brought two guys out here, and Matt stood out as the best fit for our staff," Long said.
Long and Baldwin are working on replacing offensive line coach Bob Stanley, who left last week after one season with the Lobos to take an assistant coaching job at Western Michigan.
Long said former Lobos offensive lineman and current graduate assistant Jason Lenzmeier is one of 15 candidates for the job.
"I think we'll be able to move a lot more quickly on this one because we've already interviewed so many people for our other open coaching jobs," Long said. "I have a pretty good feel for the people out there and who might be able to help us out and fit in well with the program."
