It won't appear on its record, but the Highland boys basketball team has a key win.
The Hornets won a coin toss with Rio Grande to determine the No. 3 seed in this week's District 5-5A tournament.
"We got lucky," said Highland coach Danny Brown, whose talented but enigmatic team has lost four of its last five games.
That flip of good fortune bestowed an extra day of rest, a seeding advantage to the Hive, and home court in Wednesday's quarterfinal.
Last fall, the New Mexico Activities Association tweaked its policy regarding seeding for the state tournament. Teams can't be seeded lower than district rivals they finish ahead of in regular season standings. For the Hornets (16-10), it means they can't be seeded lower than Rio Grande and Los Lunas. District 5-5A teams appear to have a strong chance to send every team to state.
"We're going to get four for sure," Brown said. "Los Lunas deserves to. Hands down, this is the best district in the state."
The selection committees meet Sunday at the NMAA.
Highland's hearing: As the fifth seed in what might be the weakest district in Class 5A girls basketball, Highland's only shot at the state tournament hinges on this week's district tournament.
If the Hornets advance to Saturday's district title game, they're in.
Falter, and they're out.
Highland's chances of making the improbable run could get a boost Tuesday afternoon.
That's when the NMAA is scheduled to rule on the eligibility of a Hive starter.
The sophomore, whom Highland coach Jon Ingram declined to identify, was ruled ineligible Feb. 2. She transferred twice in the past year after being suspended from Roswell Goddard as a freshman.
Earlier this month, NMAA spokesman Robert Zayas declined to comment on the case, citing NMAA policy. He emphasized all eligibility cases are different but noted that a suspended student could be ruled "not in good standing" upon transferring and would be ineligible for 180 days.
Ingram said the sophomore, who already sat out part of this year, has served her punishment. The hearing is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The Hornets play at Rio Grande at 5:30 p.m.
Undecided: Two districts containing local teams still haven't settled the No. 1 seed.
The La Cueva and Sandia girls will play Tuesday night at Valley to settle a regular-season tie.
Tonight, the boys District 2-4A top seed will be awarded. Los Alamos will face Espa¤ola Valley at Capital for No. 1. Bernalillo is the No. 5 seed in that district and travels to No. 4 Taos tonight at 7.
