Expect a little trash talk if the Sandia boys play La Cueva for the District 2-5A basketball tournament title.

Bears guard Jeron McIntosh and Matadors counterpart DeAndre Lansdowne spend most summers playing together for a club team. In the winter, they are rivals, but they appear to have fun with it. They like to rib each other.

Three-sport athlete McIntosh is the Bears' top scorer (12.2 points per game). He helped lift La Cueva to a key win at Sandia earlier this year. The No. 1 seed Bears host Saturday's championship.

Trib: How much do players talk about seeding?

McIntosh: Probably every day. We talk about the other teams. It's mostly praying that we get a good seed.

Trib: Where do you think La Cueva deserves to be seeded?

McIntosh: We're hoping to be four or five. But I've seen some stuff that has us at No. 6 or No. 7. We'll see.

Trib: Besides La Cueva's, what's your favorite gym to play in? Why?

McIntosh: I'd say Hobbs. It's always packed. It's small, and it gets really loud. We didn't play there this year, but we did the past two years at that holiday tournament. We got second both times.

Trib: Who is your best friend on another team?

McIntosh: (Sandia guard) Dee Lansdowne. We play AAU ball together for the Flight. We've been playing together since we were 10.

Trib: Do you guys talk smack?

McIntosh: Oh, yeah. He talks trash all the time. He's always accusing me of flopping and getting him in foul trouble. He says they're going to win and stuff like that.

Trib: What do you say to him?

McIntosh: Oh, I tell him that he gets away with stuff (offensive fouls) all the time because he's bigger than me.

Trib: How did you get your first technical?

McIntosh: Hmmm. Probably for slapping the backboard. I've done that a couple of times.

Trib: After what happened with football, did winning the regular season district basketball championship give you a feeling of redemption?

McIntosh: It does a lot. Losing to Sandia is something you don't do at our school. When you do (the Bears lost the district football title to the Matadors), you always hear about it.

Trib: Who is the toughest player you've guarded this season?

McIntosh: Marcus Williams (from Rio Rancho). He's a lot smaller than me, but he's a lot quicker. It's hard to stay in front of him and use my size because of his quickness and athleticism.

Trib: What are your plans for next year?

McIntosh: I don't know yet. I've been talking to a couple of schools in both sports (football and basketball). I might go into physical training or something in communications. I kind of want to be a journalist, too. I don't know yet.

Trib: What's in your locker?

McIntosh: A bunch of old football helmet decals. I like those.

Trib: What do you make sure to pack for road trips?

McIntosh: I don't know. We haven't been on too many road trips this year. Probably something good to eat. I like bagels, bananas and Power Bars.

Trib: What was the name of the first basketball team you played on? What do you remember about the first real game?

McIntosh: I think it was the Bulldogs. I was like 8 or 9, in the AYBL. I don't remember a lot about the first game. The only thing I really remember about that team is that me and (La Cueva forward) Kevin (Cadena) were on that team. We were like the only good players so we shot the ball every time (laughs).

Trib: Fill in the blank. If I had a billion dollars, I'd . . .

McIntosh: Go to Disney World. I've been there twice for tournaments. I love Florida.
