This winter, Rio Rancho has been a basketball power. Coming into this week, the boys team was 14-1 and the girls 8-4. There might not be a bigger hoops junkie at the school than Megan Muniz. The sophomore guard started playing as a 4-year-old and hasn't put down the ball since. Last week against Sandia, perhaps the state's best team, Muniz scored 22 points in a three-point loss.
Trib: Have you broken your New Year's resolution yet?
Muniz: I didn't really have one.
Trib: Whose game do you admire most?
Muniz: Dwayne Wade (of the NBA's Miami Heat) because he knows how to take over a game.
Trib: Was there a basketball skill that was toughest for you to learn?
Muniz: No. They were all pretty natural, I guess.
Trib: What part of your game do you want to improve?
Muniz: Defense. One-on-one defense.
Trib: Who was your favorite cartoon character as a kid?
Muniz: Bugs Bunny. He's funny.
Trib: Last year you guys nearly upset Mayfield in the state tournament. What did you learn from that?
Muniz: That no matter what other people think, if we believe in ourselves we can do it.
Trib: What game are you looking forward to most?
Muniz: It would be Cibola (Jan. 26, Feb. 8, Feb. 17) because I know that team and they're our rivals.
Trib: What job would you hate the most?
Muniz: I would hate to be a waitress. I don't have patience.
Trib: Have you ever forgot your jersey on a road trip?
Muniz: No, I haven't done that yet. I've had some friends that have forgotten shoes. I don't know how they do that.
Trib: What song pumps you up for basketball?
Muniz: For basketball it would probably be "We Fly High" by Jim Jones. I listen to a little of everything: rap, rock, country.
Trib: Basketball aside, what's your favorite way to spend free time?
Muniz: Shopping, for clothes and shoes.
Trib: What's your favorite place to go?
Muniz: For clothes it would be Hollister. For shoes it would be Champs or Lady Foot Locker.
Trib: How many pairs of shoes do you have?
Muniz: Oh man, it's probably in the fifties. I've been getting them since seventh grade.
Trib: What movie would most likely make you cry?
Muniz: There's a lot. I cried on "Armageddon." What's that baseball movie with Keanu Reeves? "Hardball."
Trib: When you were 8, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Muniz: I wanted to play in the WNBA.
Trib: What place would you most want to visit?
Muniz: When I was at church (Sunday), I decided I wanted to go to Jerusalem. My pastor was talking about it. It seems pretty and I think it would be educational.
