"Lucky 13" is what the 2007 Vans Warped Tour is being called, as the traveling, mostly punk-rock music caravan makes its 13th annual trek.

It started June 29 in Pamona, Calif., and ends Aug. 25 in Carson, Calif., after making 45 stops during a counterclockwise trip around North America. Its ninth date is July 12 in Las Cruces, the fifth consecutive summer there.

The New Mexico show features at least 50 acts, including Bad Religion, Bayside, Bless the Fall, Chiodos, Coheed and Cambria, Cute Is What We Aim For, Escape the Fate, Pepper, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, the Almost, the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Yellowcard.

The Used was supposed to co-headline on the main stage, but frontman Bert McCracken had to undergo surgery in late June after he developed a node on one of his vocal chords. The band was forced to cancel its shows in June and July.

But there should still be something to please just about everybody and anybody.

"We received over 4,000 (band) submissions, so in booking the tour this year I felt that a diverse lineup was in order," tour founder and producer Kevin Lyman said in a news release. "The tour has always been a place to explore and discover new music. This year's lineup has old school, emo, punk, screamo, hip-hop, more ska than you have seen in a long time and everything in between."

Among those groups are "next big thing" buzz band Paramore and up-and-comers Circa Survive. The Tribune asked a member of each band the same questions:

Paramore:

This Nashville, Tenn., pop-punk quartet of mostly teens — vocalist Hayley Williams, 18; brothers Josh Farro, 19, on guitars and Zac Farro, 16, on drums; and bassist Jeremy Davis, 22 — is out promoting its sophomore release "Riot!" (Fueled By Ramen/Atlantic Records). A major part of its allure is charismatic frontwoman Williams, who is over-the-top in the live setting. The music community took notice when the band released its debut "All We Know is Falling" in 2005. Josh Farro was this group's answer man.

The Tribune: Your age and how long have you guys been together?

Paramore: 19; we've been together for about three years.

Trib: Describe your band's sound.

Paramore: We're a very energetic band, with lots of energy and emotion in our music. I think we have a new sound; we don't sound like anybody else out there. And Hayley, our singer, sets us apart.

Trib: Besides the Warped Tour, what's new?

Paramore: Our new album, "Riot!," came out June 12. It's doing really well. It sold 42,000 (copies) the first week, which is shocking to us. It's doing way better then our first album. (laughs)

Trib: Have you played the Warped Tour before; how many times; when was the last?

Paramore: This is our third time on the Warped Tour. Last year, we were on the Volcom and Hurley stages. It was lots of fun.

Trib: How many dates are you doing on this year's tour?

Paramore: We're on the full tour, the main stage, this time.

Trib: What's the best part of Warped Tour?

Paramore: Just playing to so many new fans. There are different fans, different groups, that come to see other bands. So, there's lots of people who haven't heard you before. It's a chance to win over new fans.

Trib: The worst?

Paramore: The heat. It gets really, really, really hot.

Trib: What's essential for you on this tour?

Paramore: Water, cell phone, iPod and an acoustic guitar.

Trib: Who do you want to see?

Paramore: The Almost, we did a short tour, about a week or two, with them; Funeral for a Friend, we've toured with them before; and My American Heart, they're a favorite of mine.

Trib: With so many bands playing, why should the kids come see you?

Paramore: Because we're going to be one of the best shows out there. We put on a great live show. You'll miss out if you don't see us.

Trib: What's your favorite song to do live?

Paramore: "Misery Business," our single. The song's really passionate, raw and up-tempo. The kids all know it, so it becomes a singalong.

Trib: What's next after Warped?

Paramore: We go overseas for a few tours. I know for sure we're doing the Reading and Leeds Festivals in the UK. About mid-Warped Tour, we should know what's coming up; we should have our future tours locked down.

Circa Survive

After a standout performance in the Mojave Tent at this year's Coachella music fest, this Philadelphia five-piece — vocalist Anthony Green, drummer Steve Clifford, bassist Nick Beard, and guitarists Brendan Ekstrom and Colin Frangicetto — goes on a proper tour to promote its sophomore release, "On Letting Go" (Equal Vision Records). Frontman Green left Saosin, just before that band broke through, to return to his hometown, where he started his current ensemble. The band made waves with its 2005 debut "Juturna." Ask and Green shall answer.

Trib: Your age and how long have you guys been together?

Circa Survive: 25; we've been together about three years.

Trib: Describe your band's sound.

Circa Survive: We're a rock 'n' roll band, a rhythm and rock 'n' roll band. It's hard to describe our sound. You have to experience it.

Trib: Besides the Warped Tour, what's new?

Circa Survive: Our new record, "On Letting Go," came out April 29; I think it's doing well. I'm looking forward to playing the new songs live on the Warped Tour. Also, I'm a special correspondent for Alternative Press; I'll be shooting tour photos for the magazine.

Trib: Have you played the Warped Tour before; how many times; when was the last?

Circa Survive: We've played it once before, for about eight days. That was two years ago.

Trib: How many dates are you doing on this year's tour?

Circa Survive: We're doing the full tour on the main stage.

Trib: What's the best part of Warped Tour?

Circa Survive: I don't remember.

Trib: The worst?

Circa Survive: I thought we were treated real (badly) two years ago. We didn't get any catering, no meal tickets.

Trib: What's essential for you on this tour?

Circa Survive: It's important to have a positive mental attitude and to be real mellow during the tour. I'm looking forward to having a good time.

Trib: Who do you want to see?

Circa Survive: Coheed and Cambria; the Starting Line; Paramore; Bad Religion; Hot Rod Circuit. It should just be a lot of fun.

Trib: With so many bands playing, why should the kids come see you?

Circa Survive: We put on an energetic show. We really believe in what we're doing, and people can see that. You need to experience it; it's very inspiring.

Trib: What's your favorite song to do live?

Circa Survive: There isn't a song I don't like to play live. There's parts in each song I really like. I couldn't name just one.

Trib: What's next after Warped?

Circa Survive: I'm not sure — our own tour, Europe, a lot of stuff. We'll tour as long as we can behind this record, but I don't know how long that'll be. I want to keep recording and just let it happen.
