There is a saying that my father had made into a sign to hang in his motor home: "It has got to be the going and not just the getting there that is to be enjoyed."
It was in that spirit that I decided to take the train for part of a recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. Riding the rails is not the most efficient way to travel, but it allows you to take your time and see the country in a way you couldn't otherwise.
