A dog with the Albuquerque Police Department's K-9 unit is fine after a scuffle in the Northeast Heights.

Authorities say Roscoe, a Belgian malinois, was called in when a man, later identified as William Ainsworth, 18, fled from police investigating a possible stolen car.

Officer Drew Bader sent Roscoe into a 3-foot-high crawl space under a home in the 400 block of Washington Street Northeast. When the officer looked in, Ainsworth was tugging on Roscoe's collar.

"Roscoe's front legs were off the ground, and Roscoe's bark had turned into a moan," Bader said at a news conference on July 11.

When Ainsworth wouldn't release the dog, the officer crawled into the space and subdued Ainsworth after a brief struggle, he said.

Then Roscoe had his turn with Ainsworth, biting the suspect on the arm.

The dog survived with minor injuries, Bader said. "He was a little wobbly the first day after that, but he's ready to get back to work," the officer said.

Ainsworth was arrested on charges of vehicle theft, criminal damage to property and battery on a police officer, according to a police report. He could still be charged with injuring a police animal, Police Chief Ray Schultz said.
