A stock-photo snafu has sent the Albuquerque Office of Senior Affairs into a ripping frenzy.

The man on the cover of an events catalog published twice a year by the office ended up bearing a striking resemblance to a sex offender listed on a state Web site, said Blanca Hise, director of the office.

Whether it was actually the offender, once the likeness was brought to her attention by an anonymous caller, Hise's office decided to tear into action - literally - by removing the covers on all 15,000 copies of the publication.

"We decided the likeness was very close, and we decided immediately to destroy the covers," Hise said. "We didn't want to be associated with this person or run that risk."

The image was obtained as stock photography from Getty Images, based in Seattle, Hise said.

"It came as stock photography that a city contractor bought two years ago," Hise said. "We know nothing about the model."

Hise declined to give the name of the sex offender who looks like the man in the picture.

"We're still not sure if it was him," Hise said.

The catalogs list classes, activities, trips and special events for seniors.

Rather than waste taxpayer money reprinting them, Hise decided to send them out coverless to senior centers around the city.

"I want to make sure seniors and the general public know that, although the catalogs do have the covers removed, it doesn't take away from the valuable document inside," Hise said.
