A University of New Mexico history professor drowned in Hawaii while trying to save his 12-year-old son, authorities said.
Timothy Moy, 44, was pulled from the waters off Kailua Beach but died Sunday at a local hospital. His son was in serious condition Monday.
Moy had been at UNM since 1993 and specialized in the history of science and technology, University spokeswoman Karen Wentworth said. He had been recognized this year as a Presidential Teaching Fellow and was a graduate student adviser, she said.
Wentworth said Moy's colleagues had been hit hard by his death.
"They're just not holding it together well enough today to say anything," she said.
Moy's son was in the water off Kailua Beach when he began struggling at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Moy went to help his son but also got caught in the current, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.
Another beachgoer swam out to Moy with his bodyboard and found Moy unconscious. Paramedics were unable to revive him, Cheplic said.
There were no lifeguards at the section of beach were Moy drowned, the Honolulu Advertiser reported.
The paper said Moy and his family were visiting friends in Hawaii.
