Veto the veto
Passed: $9 million for Bernalillo County's Metropolitan Detention Center. Mayor Martin Chavez had vetoed the spending, part of the $500 million annual operations budget, but six councilors held their ground and overrode the veto. Voting to override were councilors Debbie O'Malley, Isaac Benton, Don Harris, Michael Cadigan, Martin Heinrich and Brad Winter.
First time for everything: Chavez had never had a veto reversed before.
Red light redex
And you thought it was over: During passage of an omnibus red-light camera tweaking in the previous City Council meeting, one idea from Councilor Ken Sanchez didn't make it into the discussion. He wants to put a six-month moratorium on the installation of the cameras - a kind of cooling-off period for the controversial program.
This time: It got talked about, but went down to defeat on a 4-4 vote.
Rendered moot: Echoing past statements by Police Chief Ray Schultz, Chief Administrative Officer Bruce Perlman said the administration didn't have plans to install any additional cameras. The cameras are now at 20 intersections, which was the city's original goal.
Save for later
Deferred: Bills dealing with tax increment development districts, such as the one approved for Mesa del Sol, and environmentally friendly building codes were put off to the June 18 meeting to allow for more work.
