The star of the University of New Mexico women's basketball team isn't spending June with her teammates.
Lobos coach Don Flanagan said senior Dionne Marsh had surgery in May, one week after the spring semester ended. She spent one week recovering in Albuquerque, then joined her family in Alabama for the remainder of this month.
"I really can't disclose what type of injury she had," Flanagan said. "It's up to Dionne whether she wants to talk about it."
Marsh could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
Flanagan said Marsh is slated to return to Albuquerque in July. He said doctors expect her to need three months to recover from the surgery and injury.
"That means she should be back in August, which should be fine," Flanagan said.
The rest of Marsh's teammates began summer school Monday and are participating in a voluntary conditioning program.
Athletes typically get stronger and faster during the summer, so losing Marsh from the workout program could be a significant blow for the team.
Marsh is the reigning Mountain West Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player. She also won the award her freshman year. She earned first team All-Conference honors her freshmen and sophomore years, and second team recognition her junior season.
Marsh is the Lobos' top returning scorer, averaging 14.7 points per game, last season. She also is one of two seniors expected to lead a young UNM team. The roster includes six sophomores and five freshmen.
