WASHINGTON — Using fake caller IDs to defraud or cause harm to people would be illegal under a bill the House passed by voice vote on June 13.
The measure is aimed at the practice of "spoofing," where scammers falsify the name and phone number appearing on caller ID to trick people called into giving up personal information. The bill, which now goes to the Senate, gives the Federal Communications Commission authority to develop regulations to enforce the law.
