The U.S. Air Force has decided against building a fence along Kirtland Air Force Base's eastern boundary that would have cut off access to hikers and mountain bikers.

The Air Force had planned to build a 6-mile-long fence through the Otero Canyon area south of Tijeras.

The canyon - popular with hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians - is considered by some mountain bikers to be one of the best trails in the area.

U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson, an Albuquerque Republican, said on June 19 the Air Force has decided some of the property on the northeast boundary of Kirtland's range is no longer required to support the base's mission.
