A 420-acre parcel of land in the East Mountains would be added to Albuquerque's roster of open spaces under a proposal from City Councilor Martin Heinrich.

The land, pi¤on and juniper forest north of Cedar Crest off N.M. 14, abuts the Gutierrez Canyon Open Space, which is already in the city's open space portfolio.

The proposed buy is a coordinated effort between the state, which would kick in $1.5 million, and the city, which would spend $500,000.

The national group Trust for Public Land has an option to buy the property, and would deed it to the city after doing so.

"The city would get a substantial new open space for a fraction of what it's actually worth," Heinrich said. "It's just too good to pass up."

The bill, formally introduced at the June 18 meeting, now heads to a committee for further consideration.
