PHOENIX Employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants risk losing their state and local business licenses under a bill sent on June 20 to Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano for approval.
Napolitano said on June 20 she would look at the bill "with great interest," because efforts to address illegal immigration concerns include dealing with the "underlying labor issue."
Proponents said the measure is needed because the federal government has failed to enforce existing law that prohibits employers from intentionally hiring illegal immigrants. Critics said they fear the bill would damage the state's business climate.
