SANTA FE Workers are pulling old rails and railroad ties from the Santa Fe Railyard, the first step in a renovation project that's part of a plan to bring the Rail Runner Express commuter train to Santa Fe from Albuquerque late next year.
The first phase of replacing rail is to be complete in two months, said Bob Sarr of Santa Fe Southern Railway. Eventually, the yard will have three side-by-side tracks by the train depot, Sarr said.
That will leave the rail yard with the same number of tracks but will create more space for parking, bike trails or other development, he said.
