He's no chicken

A new CBS/New York Times poll said a majority of voters think the next Oval Office overseer will be a Democrat. Good news for Gov. Bill Richardson, but this big kiss that CBS gave him is even better:

"Richardson has one of the most impressive résumés in the Democratic presidential field: statehouse experience, a former Cabinet member, former ambassador to the United Nations and so on. . . . (This week) he added another notch to his record when he signed a bill banning cockfighting in his state.

"Richardson's brave stance makes Louisiana the only state in which watching two male chickens fight, often to the death, is considered a legal activity. And Richardson had a warning for any would-be-outlaws in his state. `Don't do it, because now we have a law and we're going to enforce it.'

"Watch out cockfighters: There's a new sheriff in town."

But what about the horses?

Helist, a blogger on the "Daily Kos," wondered why Richardson hasn't signed a wild-horse protection bill passed by the Legislature.

"If Bill Richardson can't protect 400 wild horses in his own state . . . then how in the world could he, as president, be trusted to protect the rest of our country's or the planet's precious, deteriorating, natural resources?"

Saving energy

Richardson spoke to oil and gas investors in New York on Wednesday and explained how he'd wean the nation off its gas fix:

"Richardson, who trails front-runners Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama in the presidential field, said he would promote tax breaks for the construction of energy efficient buildings, offer tax credits for hybrid cars and public transportation, and create a system of tradable energy credits to encourage private investment in alternative energy technologies."

On the road, again

Richardson is headed to San Antonio on Monday for a fund-raiser. Just in case you've got $2,300 and nothing better to spend it on.
