Quick-hit common sense

At the Huffington Post Web site, Steve Clemons, who's written critically about Gov. Bill Richardson in the past, positively glows over his appearance on a TV program called "To the Point."

"Bill Richardson is on for the last 10 minutes - and Richardson is just superb. . . . Among the many blunt but insightful comments Richardson shared were that `Attorney General Gonzales needed to decide if he was the nation's lawyer, the peoples' lawyer, or whether he was just the president's political flack.'

". . . All in all, Bill Richardson's comments were excellent - and were the type of quick-hit common sense that other candidates should try out."

On the other hand . . .

Chris Cillizza's blog, "The Fix," at the Washington Post still ranks Richardson fourth among Democrats. "People regularly ask why we don't rank Richardson higher on our line. A recent address to the International Association of Fire Fighters typifies the reason. Unlike most of the presidential candidates who addressed the group, Richardson seemed to speak largely without a script and his remarks quickly turned into something closer to a stand-up comedy routine than a stump speech. Was Richardson entertaining? Without question. Was he presidential? Not even close."

Dashing for dollars

CBS News out of Los Angeles summed up all the Democratic candidates' appearances this weekend in California, including Richardson's. They're on the money hunt with one week to go before filing their fund-raising reports. The story correctly noted: "Candidates with disappointing fund-raising totals may be forced to drop out, while those who have had unexpected success could find themselves propelled into the top tier, with continued fund-raising momentum."

New York, New York

Richardson is headed to New York City on Monday to be the featured guest at Democratic Leadership for the 21st Century's "Road to the White House" series.

Something more than sympathy

At the "11th Hour" blog, Richardson gets kudos for his response to the return of Elizabeth Edwards' cancer, in which he urged that we redouble our efforts at fighting the disease. Says the blog: "Wasting vast sums of our limited wealth . . . in Iraq, a country that posed exactly zero threat to anyone in this country, instead of attacking things that make a real difference in our lives is just criminal."

That's just the way we are

The Web site Wilshire and Washington reported on one of Richardson's California fund-raising stops this week. Calling himself a "supplicant," Richardson took some heat from a guest who didn't like his pro-gun stances. The guv responded that he doesn't support assault weapons and that he's a hunter. "It's a way of life in the West," he explained. "Can you just give me a pass on that?"
