METROPOLITAN COURT
What: Courthouse for traffic and misdemeanor cases and arraignments in felony cases
Opened: 2004
Where: 401 Lomas Blvd. N.W.
Why? Part of a major expansion of Metro court
How much to build? About $60 million; adjacent parking garage cost $22 million
Problems? Mistakes and oversights in the original plan forced the Legislature to proved and additional $3.9 million in 2003. The parcel of land where the court sits was purchased for $5 million, well above its appraised value.
Architects: DCSW
Main contractor: Bradbury-Stamm
Who paid: Bulk of the project was funded through bonds that will be paid off with money from court fees and traffic tickets. An in-house panel of Metro Court judges and administrators oversaw the project.
