The most recent departure from the University of New Mexico men's basketball staff lasted less than a month in Albuquerque.

Former assistant Billy Garrett is leaving Steve Alford's staff for family reasons, Alford said in a news release Wednesday. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has announced Garrett will take over the associate head coaching post under Islanders head coach Perry Clark. A&M-Corpus Christi made the NCAA Tournament last season.

UNM officially announced the hiring of Garrett on April 16.

"It is unfortunate that we are losing Billy because he's a great person and an outstanding addition to our staff," Alford said. "However, his son has a specific medical condition and his doctors have told him that the altitude is not healthy for him.

"I have always been family first, so I completely understand Billy's decision."

Alford said the staff is working hard to fill the vacancy "as soon as possible."

The current staff includes associate head coach Craig Neal, assistant Ryan Miller and basketball operations director Silvey Dominguez.

Many expected Garrett to provide the Lobos with a recruiting edge in Texas, where he is rumored to have connections in talent-rich metro areas like Houston and Dallas.

Garrett spent last season with Alford's staff at Iowa before the Hawkeyes head coach bolted for UNM. Garrett's previous stop was as a Seton Hall assistant for five seasons.
