Solomon caputures gold for Lobos: University of New Mexico junior Jarrin Solomon won a gold medal in the 400-meter dash at the Mountain West Conference championships in San Diego.
Solomon was one of seven Lobos to earn all-conference honors after the meet which concluded Saturday. The UNM women finished fifth with 68 points. The UNM men finished sixth with 75 points.
The Lobos' 1,600-meter relay team, featuring an all-native New Mexican lineup (Solomon, La Cueva; Taylor Siemon, La Cueva; Kurt Henry, Cibola; Randle McCain, Silver City), won silver. UNM senior Jeremy Johnson finished second in the 5,000 and third in the 1,500. Freshman Brian Vaille finished second in the 800-meters.
On the women's side, junior Ariel Burr finished third in the 400, and senior Timmie Murphy took third in the 5,000.
UNM women's golf advances to NCAAs: The No. 19-ranked University of New Mexico women's golf team finished eighth at the NCAA West Regionals, earning the Lobos' 13th trip to the NCAA Championships and first since 2004.
The Lobos shot 14-over par in the finals and finished 56-over par at the regionals that concluded Saturday at Entrada at Snow Canyon Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
Freshman Jodi Ewart tied for seventh individually after shooting 1-over par on her final round. She shot a 218 during the three-day event and ended regionals 5-over par.
UNM will head to Orlando, Fla., for the NCAA Championships May 22-25.
UNM baseball sweeps UNLV: The Lobos survived a late rally to pick up a 6-5 win over UNLV at Isotopes Park and notch UNM's first series sweep since 2000.
It was the final home game for seniors Matt Foote, Sean McKee, Jay Russell, Jackie Smith and Daniel Stovall.
Reliever Shane Dyer earned the win Saturday, improving to 2-1 overall. Dyer replaced starter Jacob Norton with two outs left in the fifth inning and allowed one run on one hit in two innings.
Stovall blasted his 10th home run of the season with teammate Jordan Pacheco on second base to give UNM a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the second. UNM failed to score again but still dodged a Rebels rally.
The Lobos are 25-25 overall and 11-10 in Mountain West Conference play. UNM will play at Texas Tech today, then concludes MWC play at TCU with a three-game series that begins Thursday.
UNM softball season ends: The UNM softball team dropped a doubleheader to Colorado State at home, marking the end of the Lobos' season. The Rams won 6-5 in eight-innings and a 11-0 in five innings Saturday. UNM finished 20-25 overall and 9-11 in MWC play. Seniors Jennifer Detrich, Becky Dover, Ryanne Hodgins, Caley Peterson, Amy Ray and Liz Young were honored following the games.
