Coach Steve Alford is 4-for-4 on players signing after making official visits to the University of New Mexico.

The latest is 6-foot-5 guard Jonathan Wills, who told The Tribune today he signed his letter of intent to play for the Lobos.

The product of Mayfair (Calif.) High School made the commitment on his last day in Albuquerque -- and the last day of the spring signing period. After today, players can sign only non-binding agreements.

"Overall, I just felt this staff is going in the right direction and turning it around," Wills said. "I liked the spirit of the town, how they are excited about the new coaching staff and whatever they can accomplish."

Wills is the fifth player to sign with the Lobos this spring, joining high school guards Darrington Hobson and Dairese Gary and junior college forwards Monquel Pegues and Johnnie Harris. Gary, a former Iowa recruit, signed without making a visit to The Pit.

Alford, hired March 23, now has another scholarship open after the departure of forward Sean Imadiyi this week. Wills occupied UNM's last official visit available for the 2006-07 year, though the school has appealed the ruling and asked for more visits. A Lobos media relations official said Wednesday the school had not heard a response from the NCAA on the appeal.

Rated as a two-star recruit by Scout.com, Wills averaged 20.8 points and nine rebounds per game for Mayfair, the same school that produced former Air Force star Matt McCraw. Wills, who chose New Mexico over Portland State, said he feels he can contribute right away.

"I don't know what my role will be yet, but I know I need to get stronger," said Wills, who weighs about 185 pounds. "Coach said I'll have the chance to (contribute)."

Now that the college decision is finalized, Wills can focus on something else.

"After Saturday, I'll be done with prom, too," Wills said.
