More than 1,500 bright kids from 47 countries are in the Duke City to compete for $4 million in scholarships and prizes, and have a week of science fun at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Downtown.
The Tribune met with five of them from our hometown to see what it's all about.
See what they said today through Friday.
Name: H. Paul-Patrick Perseo
Age: 15
School: Eldorado High School
Grade: Sophomore
Title of project: "Splitting Water on Demand Phase II (Innovators in Automobile Fuel)."
Say that in English: Producing hydrogen to power a car. It uses water and sea salt.
Favorite area of science: Physical science.
What's cool about that area: I like all fields of physical science. I really like forensic sciences. It's interesting to examine things in-depth, like a mystery. I also like stuff that involves physics and figuring out velocity. And then I like working with circuits.
Best way to blow off steam: I play percussion. I play a snare drum in a marching band. It relieves stress and anger at the same time.
Favorite brain food: Peanuts or sunflower seeds.
Scientist role model: My grandpa; he's sort of a home inventor. He's just full of knowledge.
If you could ask that role model one thing, what would it be:I'd ask, "Why does he save everything?" He's a pack rat. I guess it pays off, because he can build anything.
Dream job: Either to be an engineer or a crime scene investigator. It just appeals to me.
