Mayor Martin Chavez took a new, super-quiet electric car for a spin on Civic Plaza to call attention to his administration's efforts to buy more fuel-efficient cars for the city fleet.
The city is using the cars, which can run at 25 mph and cover about 35 miles per eight-hour charge, for parking enforcement and security patrols, Chavez told reporters Tuesday.
The electric vehicles are on loan from the automaker ZENN (Zero emission no noise), but the mayor said the city eventually would likely buy some.
The cars cost about $13,000 each.
