With the announcement that City Councilor Craig Loy will not seek a second term, real estate agent Trudy Jones is off and running to win the Far Northeast Heights district.

Loy said Thursday one term is enough. Jones had said she would only run if Loy did not.

Jones is vice president of the commercial real estate firm Grubb & Ellis. Her community involvement includes service with La Familia Adoption Service, Hospice of the Rio Grande, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra Guild and her homeowners association.

On the political front, Jones said she wants to focus on easing traffic congestion in the city, bolstering the police force, tailoring planning policy to specific parts of town and encouraging civility on the council.

"We need to be more professional," she said.

She described her relationship with Mayor Martin Chavez as "comfortable and professional."

Loy, a former police officer who now installs and programs automated teller machines, will complete his term at the end of the year. He said he looks forward to spending more time with his family.

"Just this month, I've had 17 meetings," he said. "Balancing family life in there is just impossible."
