With friends like that . . .

The Miami Herald reported on Gov. Bill Richardson's trip to Florida this week, recounting his stances on immigration and Cuba. What caught The Kates' eyes was something way down in the story.

"Though Richardson has been raising money in Florida for years, he collected only $200,000 during the first three months of 2007.

" `He's a charming guy, but that charm hasn't been there,' said former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre, a Richardson supporter.

" `Hispanics, like all people, like to be with a winner, and so far he hasn't risen above the fray,' he said."

And that's from a supporter. Might be time for a charm offensive, Guv.

Foxy move

Richardson finally made up his mind about that Fox News debate that the top-tier Dem candidates couldn't run away from fast enough. On Wednesday, he and Chris Dodd announced they won't play - a decision likely to win them some heat from the Congressional Black Caucus, which is co-sponsoring the debate with the conservative network.

Noted by the Associated Press, however: "The caucus is co-sponsoring another Democratic debate with CNN. No one has indicated they will miss that one."

NOT the Hispanic candidate

Columnist Jos‚ de la Isla writes about Richardson being tagged as the Hispanic candidate rather than every candidate being nagged about what they'll do for Hispanics.

"(I)sn't it important to know what secondary and higher education advancement policy is in store as the nation's population increases 50 percent in the next 50 years and the Hispanic population grows 188 percent? Isn't the blending of U.S. population groups also a matter of visioning instead of talk, as if we lived under apartheid? . . .

"All relevant candidates need to fuse the Hispanic story into their presidential campaigns. Bill Richardson should not have to stand alone."

He's here, and then he's gone

Richardson, back in the state for two days of fund-raisers, hits the trail again Saturday. He'll give a speech in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, then another in Concord, N.H. Sunday, he'll be at the CNN debate in Manchester. Monday, he'll do a couple of appearances in Rosemont, Ill., then jet to a fund-raiser in Phoenix.
