Darren White might not have it so easy after all.
There was speculation that White, the Republican Bernalillo County sheriff, would have the Republican primary for the 1st Congressional District seat to himself. Now it looks as if he could have at least one challenger.
State Sen. Joe Carraro of Albuquerque said Thursday he has formed an exploratory committee that could put him on the path to challenging White in the June 3 primary election for the seat being vacated by Rep. Heather Wilson, an Albuquerque Republican.
"As a state senator, I have dedicated my life to improving the quality of life for every New Mexican," he said in a statement.
Carraro, known in the Roundhouse for his work on sex offender and DWI legislation, said he has attended one candidate forum.
In 2006, Carraro finished second in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Jeff Bingaman, losing to Allen McCulloch.
Other possible primary contenders for Wilson's seat include state Sen. Mark Boitano, who said he expects to decide early next week whether he's in, and state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones. Both are from Albuquerque.
Whoever wins would face the victor of the Democratic primary. So far, candidates include Martin Heinrich, Michelle Lujan Grisham, Jason Call and Jon Adams.
